What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is also called “EEG biofeedback”, or “brainwave training”.  Neurofeedback is a way to train the brain to achieve unconscious control of particular frequencies of brain activity associated with states of attention and relaxation.  Neurofeedback training rebalances the brain by interrupting inefficient patterns and by helping the brain to establish more robust rhythms.  Once free of ineffective patterns, the brain is able to rebalance itself, and people can experience many improvements in their lives including:  better sleep, increased concentration and focus, decreased impulsivity, less mental chatter, decreased irritability, improved memory, reduced anxiety, and an overall enhanced feeling of well-being oftentimes without medication.

A computer is used to monitor the moment-to-moment activity of a person’s brain.  This information about how the brain is performing is fed back to the brain through the use of sounds and animations. The brain uses this feedback to decrease its instability and to increase communication both within and between its right and left hemispheres.  The result is a brain that processes information more efficiently and, therefore, is less likely to become overwhelmed by too much input of information, or to become stuck in ineffective processing patterns.
